The Grape Touchdown
Materials Checklist
- Bible
- Chalkboard and chalk or large sheet of paper and a
felt pen.
- Masking tape or tacks
- Three or four purple balloons
- Cluster of grapes with part of vine or long stem
attached
Preparation
Letter the words of Bible memory verse on chalkboard or
sheet of paper. Display verse chart in visible location.
Inflate balloons and tie.
Procedure
Recite the verse aloud with students several times,
referring to chalkboard or chart. Divide class into groups
of five or six students. (Some child may be more comfortable
in same-sex groups.) Groups spread out around room and stand
in circles, holding on to each others' wrists. Give each
group a balloon and say, Imagine each group is a vine, and
the balloon is the grape. The object of the game is to stay
connected. Don't let go of each other or let the grape touch
the ground. Have groups practice tapping balloon into the
air while holding each others' wrists, then begin game. One
student taps the balloon into the air while saying the first
word of the memory verse. The person who is closest to where
the balloon is falling taps it up again and says the second
word in the verse, and so on. Students may use any part of
their body to keep the balloon in the air, but must continue
to hold wrists. If the balloon lands between two people, and
both hit the balloon up, then both students say the word
together. Once verse is completed, students may start over
again. If the balloon hits the ground, or players let go of
wrists, group begins verse over. Groups keep count of how
many times the verse is completed. Share the results.
(Optional: Cover up or erase two or three words of the verse
each time you play to make it more difficult.)
