Animal Talk
God is big enough to care for us in all
situations.
Teacher Materials:
- Bible, book marked at Nahum 1:7
- Large Sheet of Paper
- Marker
- Pictures of animals discussed below (optional)
Bible Verse:
"The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares
for those who trust in him." Nahum 1:7
Introduce the Object Talk:
A refuge is a place of safety. Because God is so great,
He is like a refuge for us. He also cares for His creation
by making ways for them to be safe. Let's discover some ways
in which God made refuges for animals.
Present the Object Talk:
- On large sheet of paper, draw nine blank lines, one
for each letter of the word "porcupine." Volunteers guess
letters of the alphabet. As each correct letter is
guessed, write it on the appropriate blank line. When an
incorrect letter is guessed, write it to the side of the
blank lines. Volunteers keep guessing letter until the
work is identified. What did God give a porcupine to help
keep it safe? Quills that stand up when a porcupine is
afraid.)
- Repeat game with other animals: chameleon-able to
change skin color, so it is less noticeable;
gorilla-usually peaceful and shy but beats chest and
screams when afraid; ostrich-largest bird in the world
and can protect itself with a very powerful kick;
snowshoe hare-grows white coat in winter to help it hide
from attackers; alpine marmot-hides in rocks and whistles
to other marmots when danger is present; mountain
goat-special pads on hoofs stop it from slipping on steep
rocks; sea otter-two layers of fur give it cold ocean
water.
Conclude:
Even though these items can help us and give us true
information in many situations, sometimes they can't help
us. Listen to this Bible verse to find out whom we can
depend on in ANY situation, no matter how bad things look.
Read Jeremiah 17:7 aloud. Why can we be confident in God's
help? (He is more powerful than anything in the world. He
loves us and promises to be with us.) Lead children in
prayer, thanking God for his help and that he is always with
us.
Discussion Questions:
- What are some other objects that you depend on? (Car.
Bike. Computer.) Why might these items not always be
dependable? (Cars break down. Bikes get flat tires.
Computers "crash".)
- What are some times when kids your age need to depend
on God's help? People older than you? Younger than
you?
- What can you do when you need to remember God's help?
(Pray to Him. Remember a Bible verse about His power and
help.)
